AIM Leadership Development Conference 2015 Modules

Effective Leadership for Community Health Equity (Presentation) (Handout)

Speaker: Eric T. Baumgartner, MD, MPH, Director, Policy and Program Development Louisiana Public Health Institute

Content: This session is comprised of instructive presentation, facilitated audience participation and small group exercises. Small group exercises will address personal leadership reflection and journaling, creating the environment for building shared aspirational goals among persons, organizations and sectors. The session also includes methods to provide feedback that builds trust and engagement. The exercise focuses on discerning transactual vs adaptive leadership opportunities/challenges.

Objectives: The participant will have a better understanding of 1) the distinction between "management” and "leadership” as a foundation for further leadership development; 2) the importance of naming and planning for the underlying forces that create events, organizational performance and community-level trends, i.e., transactional vs. adaptive leadership; 3) insight into and a frame of competencies around personal, organizational and leadership.

Part 2: Leadership
This session, “Leadership,” provides participants an opportunity to learn about the the personal mastery of leadership competencies and the opportunity to build synergy by working together towards a common goal. Dr. Baumgartner addresses the value of humility in team building and the mastery of collaborative leadership. Participants will be introduced to Six Conversations that Matter (Peter Block), Expectancy Theory and Appreciative Inquiry (Cooperrider and Whitney).


Part 3: Collective Leadership

This session, “Collective Leadership,” provides participants an opportunity to learn about successful community strategies, including foregoing blame for the past and moving forward, cross sector inclusion, reciprocal accountability and community/polical will-building. Participants will learn how to garner substantive and lasting partnerships, avoid missed opportunities in community partnering and going to the next level. Dr. Baumgartner has included a comprehensive list of leadership resources to allow participants to expand their knowledge of building successful leadership skills.
