Part I: Overview of Leadership – What Effective Leaders Do: Setting Direction and Creating Culture (Presentation)
Speaker: Peter Ginter, MBA, PhD, University of Alabama at Birmingham
Content: Participants will be introduced to leadership theories and leadership behaviors (task and roles) and provided with a practical framework for thinking about and improving leadership skills. The session will focus on the key elements of what effective leaders do – set direction and create culture and will provide insights, tools, and principles for these leadership activities.
Objectives: Participants will understand the nature, tasks, and roles of leadership and appreciate the differences between leadership and management and how they work together. Participants will be provided with building blocks for the development of a personal leadership philosophy that will be further developed and refined in Part II.
Part 1, entitled, “Leadership Basics” introduces the learner to leadership theories, contrasts characteristics of management and leadership, explores the value of strong leadership and describes how mangers can become leaders.
Part 2, entitled, “What Effective Leaders Do” focuses on establishing direction and creating a strong organizational culture. The participant will learn how to think, plan and lead strategically as well as how to manage strategic momentum. This session describes the characteristics of creating vision within an organization with a focus on strategic criteria and goals.
Part 3, entitled,” What Effective Leaders Do: Creating Organizational Change Principle 11-25.” introduces the learner to Dr. Ginter’s principlesals of leadership, describing the importance of vision in any organization and communicating this vision effectively
